According to my calendar, today "Autumn Begins."

In honor of the first day of autumn, (which is never capitalized, I checked) this post will be about one of my favorite things to do in the fall--going to the pumpkin patch with my kids.  We go at least twice.  It seems like we never get enough pumpkins the first time.  I also like to buy cornstalks and straw bales and decorate the front of the house.  We have a favorite place that we like to go.  Spyglass Gardens.  It's close to our house, small, and kid friendly.  The people who own it are so nice. We've been going there for the last 5 years and it's become a tradition. They have pumpkins you can pick, a little maze made from straw bales, and lots of other vegetables, corn stalks, and straw bales for sale.  Admission is free.  You are only charged for the things you buy and the pumpkins are priced according to size, not weight.  They are closed on Mondays and picking begins on September 28th.  So get in the spirit of fall and plan a trip to the pumpkin patch.   Don't forget your camera.

There are other pumpkin patches around town that are great too.  I found a great website that lists the local ones.  Go to www.pumpkinpatchesandmore.org.
Another great site is www.pickyourown.org.

One more thing--I think Wagner Farms is closed.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  Happy Autumn everyone!  (Whoops).

Thank you for the info. I've been trying to decide if/where to take my preschool class of 9. Do you think Spyglass Gardens would be a good place? How much time do you spend there? Looking at their website, it looks like it is free admission? Am I reading that correctly? I'm assuming you have to pay for the pumpkin you pick? Thanks for your help...

I think Spyglass Gardens would be a great place to take your preschool. It is free admission. I would call in advance and let them know when you are coming. You are only charged by the pumpkins you buy. They are priced according to size. Small, medium, large. When we've gone in the past we have only spent a half hour there because it's not a big place. The sooner you go in October the better as the pumpkins start to get picked over. Have fun. Let us know how it goes.

Amanda,

I LOVE your blog! Where do I start?!
I LOVE the performing arts but haven't been to an actual event in ... well... FOREVER! I also LOVE football. So, it was hard to vote on your poll!
I'm so glad I found your blog...fun stuff!!

Holly--so you voted for football! That's okay. I as glad to find your blog too. Your Holly Doodle creations are amazing. How was the Hyde Park event? I wanted to go...maybe next year.

I am so glad I found this site, I haven't really searched it, but have you posted things about the eastern side of the state? If not, you should "explore" Mesa Falls-it's amazing and they even have a camp ground and little museum...it's pretty neat...but I also need inspiration where to take my kiddos some afternoon/saturday...and I will be checking out Spyglass Gardens on the 3rd, I'm way excited!!

jt42, Glad you found the blog.

I haven't spent much time of the eastern part of Idaho just because I don't like to drive more than two hours with my kids. But when we get to that point in our lives we will definitely check out Mesa Falls. It looks fun. Have fun at Spyglass when you get a chance to go.

LOVE Spyglass gardens. It is now a tradition in our family too. (We've already been two years in a row so this Halloween will be a third.) We love that they have wagons there for the kids to ride in a put their pumpkins in. They always give us the little small pumpkins for free... maybe because we usually go a couple days before Halloween... or they do it all the time.

Melonie--It's special treatment. I think you get the small pumpkins for free because your kids are so adorable. Mine are adorable too so we've always gotten the small ones for free. Yes, the wagons are fun. Perfect for pictures. Kids. Wagons. Pumpkins. What more could you ask for?

I LOVE the pickyourown.org website! I've been able to find pumpkin farms and lots of other types of farms all over the country! Reading your site makes me miss Boise!

Holly, here's a funny story for you. When Bella was little I used to tell her that there were no bad people in Idaho. Then one day she asked me, "Mom, where do the bad people live?"
"New Jersey."
I'm sorry Holly. If I'd ever known you were going to be living there I would have picked a different state.
I'm glad you like pickyourown.org. I think it's cool too.

Angee,
Thanks for the Arte Y Pico award. I'm so flattered. And I'm sooo glad you voted Performing Arts. Sadly though, I think we're going to lose to football.
